FUND UPGRADING
SMI's most popular strategy, Upgrading assembles a portfolio from the recommendations updated each month on SMI's Recommended Funds page. It is designed for those willing to periodically adjust their mutual fund holdings with the goal of owning those funds demonstrating superior results at any given time. Through a more active buying and selling discipline, Upgrading expects to do better than a passive indexing approach.

JUST-THE-BASICS
SMI's simplest investing strategy, Just-the-Basics uses Vanguard index funds to roughly match the performance of the overall stock and bond markets. Once your money is allocated among the funds initially, your only housekeeping chore is a quick rebalancing once per year.

ADVANCED STRATEGIES
One of SMI's main goals is to simplify investing for the average person. Our primary investing strategies (Fund Upgrading, Just-the-Basics) are sufficiently conservative that either can be used as the core of your portfolio (i.e., where the bulk of your assets are invested). However, we also have investing techniques that are more time consuming or perhaps a bit too volatile for the average investor. These items, which are not part of our model portfolios, are featured on our Advanced Strategies page. Understand that these strategies are completely optional.

PERSONAL PORTFOLIO TRACKER
The SMI Personal Portfolio Tracker makes it easy to gather fund performance data from our monthly "Fund Performance Rankings." Each month, you can quickly have a report in hand showing exactly what, if any, upgrades should be made to your 401(k) or other retirement-plan accounts.

BOND PORTFOLIO TOOL
This tool was designed for those who want to take a more hands-on approach to their fixed-income investing, rather than simply using the Vanguard bond index funds normally recommended by SMI. It helps you see how various combinations of Vanguard bond (and other income-oriented) funds would have performed in the recent past.
